This webinar is part one of a three-part Gender Equity webinar series. Session 1 will be covering ways to promote gender equity in the OR, with speakers eager to share lessons learned from lived experiences. 

A 2017 publication in the BMJ showed: After accounting for patient, surgeon, and hospital characteristics, patients treated by female surgeons had a small but statistically significant decrease in 30-day mortality and similar surgical outcomes (length of stay, complications, and readmission), compared with those treated by male surgeons.

A 2021 publication in JAMA showed: Female patients operated on by male surgeons had a 32% increased risk of death compared to women operated on by female surgeons. 

Still, female surgeons struggle for gender equity in every regard in the operating room, whether in getting preferred OR block time, finding the appropriately sized gloves and instruments, or fighting the double standard of expectations of female surgeons compared to their male colleagues.
