Palliative Care Module Series - Part 1 (CE version)

The SGO Palliative Care Committee has developed a series of 15 modules. Part 1 includes the first five topics listed below. This content is primarily designed for trainees but is useful for providers at all levels in all settings.

Anorexia and Cachexia

Objectives

  • Descript the pathophysiology driving anorexia and cachexia in advanced cancer
  • Articulate the steps in evaluation of anorexia and cachexia
  • Review pharmacologic interventions for anorexia
  • Recognize the importance of contextualizing the evaluation and management of anorexia/cachexia within broader discussion of goals of care

Constipation

  • List three different medications that can be used to manage constipation
  • List the mechanism of action of each of those medications
  • Understand that prevention is critical
  • Prescribe laxatives with every prescription for opioids

Dyspnea

  • List differential diagnosis for dyspnea near the end of life
  • Dose opioids appropriately for dyspnea management

Nausea and Vomiting

  • Recognize the importance of targeting nausea medications based on mechanism
  • List at least two anti-emetics available for non-oral routes of administration

Neuropathic Pain
